“Liberation” – An Inspirational Poem

The following poem is a little something I wrote while I was sitting in my Sociology class the other day. I was doing research for a project about the culture and experiences of the Karen ethnic group from South-East Asia. They have endured decades of civil war, and now many have come as refugees to the city and country I live in. This poem is partly inspired by the experiences of this group of people.

In Sociology we often study and analyse how issues experienced in societal groups change and affect subsequent generations. It got me thinking about how as individuals, all of our experiences, including hardships, shape us into the people we are today. This poem is also inspired by unresolved issues in my personal life.

Things can happen in our lives, that we may think we have healed from, moved on from, or no longer affect us. Often, we go around still subconsciously carrying these burdens. And they affect us by continuing to manifest in different ways.

“Liberation”

So much has changed,

yet so much stays the same

A strange disconnect,

yet the longing remains

Removed from the past,

yet the same scars reign

Or do they?

Freedom and liberation,

we struggle to attain

The downward spiral,

we condescendingly disdain

The once happy village,

we will never regain

Or will we?

Maybe it is possible,

to be free from the chains,

the drain of the lingering pain

Look up and see the dread,

turn into a hope ahead

The tearstained eyes,

turn into a beautiful lens

Of wisdom and assurance,

without need for a happy end

It is when we find this light,

that we may begin to mend

Some things may change,

yet so much stays the same

Find a way to connect,

yet the longing remains

Accept it, embrace it, no need to defend,

meet yourself in the afterpains

Find your light,

and give yourself the liberty to mend.

So is healing possible? That is the question, a question I certainly don’t have all the answers to. However, I do know that the first step to healing is self awareness. Uncovering the layers of your subconscious mind and meeting yourself where you are at. It is ourselves that are holding us back from healing; not circumstances or the people around us. The process of healing is as enlightening as it is painful, and empowering as it is humbling. It may be endless, but it starts with a choice.
